Walking all the way is like binding places together in a way that other forms of transport never will. It is for all intents and purposes a journey of journeys. 80% of all journeys ever made are less than a mile. Most long journeys, and nearly all public-place journeys, have a quality which is like glue to the system. What we do is to try to keep accounts. Nearly a whole third of all walker and joggers or any description feel under pressure to do a mile. The car is different and, in many ways, all vans and lorries used as transport for goods involve the drivers in short walks.”
